It covers the period from the most ancient times to 600 AD. It is divided into seven chapters. In addition to the usual political history, the book provides a study of society, economy, polity, art, religion, language and literature. The book is based on the latest researches and topics like urbanization, state formation, social formation, social position of women, caste system and nation making are also discussed. It also takes care of divergence in historiography as well as differing opinions of the historians which enliven past researches.
